{Caged} Faith vs Fear

Fear: noun
a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.

I have lots of fears.. one of them people laugh at all the time.. I am TERRIFIED of bees.
Yes those little yellow and black flying creators of honey scare me to death!! I've been known to hurt myself running from them. Silly I know, but a very real fear to me. I can't help it!!
{but} this isn't the type of fear we are talking about today.

There are many types of fears that cage us in, and prevent us from doing the things that the Lord has asked of us, and really it comes down to this... HE has chosen US to do HIS work, HE belives in us, so why are we afraid to do HIS work with HIM by our side??

Here are some of the reasons I've found.. and some of the ways the Lord has shown us that we don't need to live in fear.

{inadequacy} who hasn't felt that they aren't enough to take on the task at hand??  It's when we think we can do it by ourselves that we feel inadequate and not good enough, because we can't do it alone.
When I was a teenager I had no desire to be a parent ever. Not just at that time but ever. I was so afraid that because of all the hurts, anger, depression, and emptiness I would be a seriously inadequate parent, completely lacking in all a child would need from me. The Lord had His own plan... as he always does, and I got pregnant at 18... I had Drew my oldest at 19, and man oh man talk about a serious feeling of fear!!! I came back to the Lord at 25, and since then my feelings about my parenting aren't lacking, because I'm not doing it alone, I parent with the Lord on my side and now we have 4 kids and I love it. However I'm always a work in progress for many other things I can feel not good enough for.  Alone we can't do it all But with Christ we can do ALL things.

{Rejection} Man this is a hard pill to swallow isn't it. This is one of the biggest things I struggle with. I'm always so afraid when I share a bit of me I'm going to be rejected, or when I share and idea that I'm going to be laughed out of the room. This blog right here is beyond scary for me... because of my fear of rejection. I have learned to take comfort in the FACT that Jesus will NEVER reject me, and will NEVER reject you either.
{Failure} This is a HUGE one for me. I mean this one will tie me up in knots.. I will lose sleep and lose hair over this. You know the saying you never know if you don't try... well my thought is you'll never fail if you don't try.
When Tim and I went to get married I was soooo scared. Not because we were getting married... but because I had failed once before. Yes I was divorced, and I was so scared about failing again. It was so hard to face my family the first time to say that the marriage didn't work, and that we were getting divorced, even though he had broken our marriage vows, I still like a failure because we had 2 sons who were now the products of divorce, and in that divorce he had abandoned them. What if I picked the wrong guy to marry this time around?? What if he leaves?? What if he cheats?? what if?? what if??
The fear of failure leads you down the rocky path of what ifs.. at some point we need to stop and say {WHAT IF IT'S ALL OK??} What if it's all in God's plan?? What if failing is in God's plan to make us stronger?? What if failing is to teach us how to persevere?? What if we succeed?
Jonah was afraid to fail... once he was released from the whale, he went into Ninevah and did what was asked of him, and he succeeded in sharing the Lord with the city, and showing them the error of their ways and saving them from the wrath of the Lord. {by the way... he did it all with the Lord by his side.. not alone}

That verse right there is one I live by always... it's one that my family recites often, because so often our lives are dictated by our fears..
It's time for us to break free.

have a great week!!
If you need any prayers, or have any thoughts please post a comment here. I would love to read them and get to know who is reading this!!

{Caged} Why Bird Cages Inspire Me

I'm asked often what bird cages have to do with crochet. Or why I love bird cages so much. So I'm going to give you my story. Then my goal once a week is to talk about the things that cage us in, and how with the Lord we are set free from our cages.

Let me start here... my name is Becky and I have bouts of depression. There I said it... it's not something I like to talk about at all... {EVER} Many who know me think of me as a happy person who is filled with joy. Most of the time I am. {BUT} I have some horrible days too. The peace in those is that the Lord is there with me in those too.

So you might be wondering what has caused this girl to be depressed?? I will go into all of my story as {Caged} goes on... but I will give some insight now as to why I am inspired by bird cages, and why the word caged means so much to me.

I've found the best way to share this part of my life is to do it like a band aid... so please forgive me.

From the time I was 10-13 I was sexually abused by my stepfather and  oldest stepbrother. When given the choice, my mother chose to stay living with my stepfather, and allow the state to take her parental rights from her. I was VERY blessed to live with my grandparents, though at the time I didn't see that. During this time, I tried to commit suicide.. well tried as well as a scared 13 yr old girl could.. once I took a steak knife and tried to slit my wrist... I didn't get very deep it hurt too much but it left a scar. The next time I took some pills...my Papa looked at me and said "Don't I love you enough?" that was it for me... I have {NEVER} had the desire to do that ever again. During that time, my cousin gave me a copy of "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" by  Maya Angelou  I read it and at once I identified with her. There my love of bird cages began. Fast Forward many years.. I went to a women's event where the speaker was talking about the pain of our past. If we let it, it can cage us like birds. We are beautifully and wonderfully made, and yet we allow ourselves to be caged by our hurts, and scars, instead of living our life in the freedom of the spirit. Which is when I realized I've been looking at this all wrong... I'm not in the cage. I'm not meant to be singing from my cage, I'm meant to be free. There are so many things that cage us, and prevent us from living the life of complete freedom that the Lord has given us.. and my hope in this journey is to set us all free!
I leave you today with this verse:

Philippians 4:6-7

Never worry about anything. But in every situation let God know what you need in prayers and requests while giving thanks. Then God’s peace, which goes beyond anything we can imagine, will guard your thoughts and emotions through Christ Jesus.

The {Purdy} Girl Story

Have you heard about the new Purdy girl in town? Everyone is talking about her.A little girl named Rose was always crafting. She needed a friend so she crafted a friend she named her Lilly. Lilly was her best friend she had cute little button eyes a perfect little smile that never turns into a frown. Soon everyone wanted a doll just like the one that Rose had and they said they would pay anything to have one. Rose made more of course but before she gave dolls to the people who wanted it the most she gave it to the ones that had nothing. She met orphan girls that had nothing and made a doll to match each of their personalities. She made each doll with love and care. Then of course there are the girls who had families and toys... and these girls wanted a Purdy Girl Doll too, because what girl doesn't want a doll that was made just for them, with love, and prayers?? So of course Rose went back to her cottage to make more of these special dolls and said special prayers for each of the girls who were going to receive these dolls.
She went home that night and thanked God for letting her put smiles on the girls faces and she hoped that they would never turn into a frown just like Lillys' never would, and wondered what names these new Purdy Girl Dolls would have?? Did you know you can even get your very own Purdy Girl Doll??? She will be made with lots of love and prayers just for you!

About a {boy} named Drew: No Wheelchair Can Stop Me

Last Monday started like any other Monday.. Amber and I dropped Ryan and Chey off at the church office for summer camp... then went home to get Drew for his dental check up... pretty normal right?? Well it was...

Drew goes from his wheelchair to the Exray chair at the dentists, they go to take his blood pressure and it's 68/50 sooooo they do a cleaning, while I call the nuerologist, and ask what they would like me to do...

We end up at the emergency room in Phoenix Children's Hospital. Luckily it was just an episode, and they sent him home...

So that Saturday we did what we do every first and third Saturday of the month... we served at the food mission our church hosts.  We got our official name badges and Drew was pretty proud to get his because he loves to serve and he loves to show Gods love by giving of his time and self to others... no wheelchair can stop him!!

I am so proud of him... he really hasn't let the chair stop him. He goes to church with us every Sunday, and loves to go out, he's ready to face his freshman year in the chair if he's still in it {though we keep praying that he's not}

{UPDATE ON DOCTOR STUFF}
  • Yesterday on the 18th of June we had a regular eye appointment, and the Dr dialated Drews eyes and found scarring in the Chortoid and Retina of his eyes... so the office made an appointment on the 5th of July with a Retina Specialist to get it checked out. This just might be the clue we needed!!!
  • We have an appointment on the 12th of July with an immunologist to check for autoimmune disorders.
  • While we were at the ER we were made much more comfortable about Drew's neurologist's desire to get us into the Mayo Clinic here in Scottsdale, so we are much more hopeful about the possibility that we might get to go there.
Again thank you all so much for reading these and for your continued prayers, and for sharing these posts!! Our family loves the comments, and Drew really appreciates the words of encouragement!!

Being a {girl} is fun!! Pinterest Nail Fun!

So my daughters and I have a pinterest obesession.. we {LOVE} to look up nail art and hair styles... and we try them out too!! I'm going to start posting how we do with our interpretations of these awesome pins!!

Here is what my nails look like!! I used teal instead of pink, and moved the design to my pointer finger... but I just love how it came out and received lots of compliments!! It was super easy to do with a nail pen!
There isn't instructions for how to do this.. so here is how I did it, I used the color {Concrete Evidence} from Ulta, and the while and teal design pens from Sally Hansen. I painted two coats of the grey first, waited till they were 100% dry, then using the pen painted the stripes, once they were dry (which was super fast) I drew a heart and colored it in) super easy... if you need guides you can use nail tape that you can get at any Sally's or other beauty supply.

Here is the pin we saw on pinterest, and when you follow the link to Katrina's Nail Blog you will find many more style and lots of nail inspiration:

Are you going to try this?? What colors are you going to use?? I would love to read all about it!!

{DIY} Awesome Suspenders

This Saturday my 12 year old daughter and I were on a mission to find some suspenders.. and just couldn't find anything she liked... so we both had a light bulb moment!! Let's make some ourselves!! And that is just what we did!! And since we had soo much fun making them, we decided to share how to make them with everyone. We hope you like it, and have fun with it!

{DIY} Suspenders

Tools and materials:
  • 3 yards elastic backed fabric (we used elastic backed sequins)
  • 4 suspender clips
  • sewing machine with matching thread (you can hand sew these if you prefer)
  • Ribbon for bows *optional
  • head pins

Pattern

  1. Measure 2 strips of fabric from hip to hip front to back, the way suspenders go on and leave a 1/2" extra on each side.
  2.
on each end, slide it through the suspender clip, pull it through 3/4" and sew it securely. So you will have all 4 clips securely sewn on.
3. Put the suspenders on, as they would be worn, and pin the x in the back.  Sew the x securely.

 4. *optional bow. if you would like the bows on the front, get a piece of ribbon sew it in a circle, and take another piece of ribbon and take it in the middle to create a bow shape, and then hot glue it to the front part of the suspender.

I hope you have fun with these suspenders!! I would love to see what you make with this easy to make pattern!! please email me your pictures to Becky@Purdythings.com and I will create a post with the best of the best!!!

About a {boy} named Drew - June 2012

So here we are June, Drew is still dizzy, but we now have this awesome high back reclining wheelchair and he can get around the house. We are so blessed to have a house that he can get around in.
As of now, he's been to a Cardiologist, and it's not his heart, a Neurologist, and it's not his brain, a Endocrinologist, and it's not his glands or hormones, an ENT and it's not his inner ears.

So now we are on the waiting list for the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota waiting for Dr. Fischer, who is a pediatric specialist in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.  {POTS} for short. While the Dr's and I aren't all that convinced that it's POTS it hasn't been ruled out, and since so many other things have been ruled out, it's a long shot, but it's a shot none the less. Drew's neurologist, is making a phone call to a local Mayo clinic that doesn't usually see children, to see if they can work with his case. We are also pursuing a Pediatric Rhumatologist to test him for Auto-immune disorders now.

On the bright side...
you can see that he has such a wonderful sense of humor from the balloon picture. And with it being summer the pool is up and Drew wanted so bad to get in, so we put him in it.. and to our joyous surprise he loved it!! He can swim and not be dizzy in the water.. needless to say the kids spend pretty much everyday in the pool... which is a joyous sight!!
My other 3 kids have been so amazing through all of this, they have been more than helpful, and so compassionate. I
don't know what I would do without them.

That's all for now...
thank you all for the continued thoughts and prayers.

playing with sparklers in the backyard

and being so happy to be a free American

So I had to design something for the 4th of July that could be worn by all ages. and came up with this amazing headband. Last year just the headband was for sale, this year I've made the pattern available too!!!

About a {boy} named Drew

317594_10150312296381630_245994441629_8570977_2135006037_n
So it was a Monday like any other Monday April 2nd. I was getting the kids ready for school, waking them up, making sure they get ready etc…. as we get the older ones ready to go out the door. I realize that 14 yr old Drew isn’t with them, I go in his room to find out why, and he’s still sleeping, he doesn’t want to wake up, I get after him for the usual you don’t get to decide if you go to school or not, I do…but he still just can’t seem to open his eyes.  I can’t figure out why he’s so tired, he had gone to sleep early the night before… a couple hours later I finally got him awake, when he went to stand up he couldn’t he was so dizzy he couldn’t sit stand or walk un-assisted. Took him to the ER, where they didn’t do much much tell us to see an Endocrinologist to find out why he’s so dizzy.
By Friday we took him to a pediatric ER where they admitted him for a night.. but did NOTHING for him, sent him home with no answers and no help…. so almost 2 weeks after this all started and he was STILL unable to sit, stand or walk un-assisted, and after we took him to the endocrinologist (who said that he didn’t have to see an endocrinologist it was either a  cardiology or neurology need)  we took him to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Where we saw at least a dozen drs. No exaggeration. They are convinced it’s a neurological problem… but what kind well that is still a mystery.  Is it vertigo?? Is it inner ears?? Is it Cerebral?? Is it in the spinal cord??
IMG_4843-3
As a mother all these questions with no answers are killing me… I’ve hit my stress limit more than once where I’ve broken down in tears. I’ve felt beyond helpless, I’ve felt beaten down, broken, I have asked the Lord why, I’ve asked the Lords help and then taken the burden back not giving him all my trust. I’ve been grumpy, and moody. And in all this Drew has been happy and laughing and maintained a pretty darn good spirit. Which has baffled me… how?? It’s happening to him how is HE not feeling like this too… don’t get me wrong I’m so glad he’s not, but wow. So after coming home from yet another Dr’s appointment where he was poked and prodded with needles etc, I asked him just HOW he’s kept such a great attitude here was his reply:
"its just one of those challenges of life that you go through and you
have to make sure you keep the Lord with you or you can't get through it. If I
loose hope joy or faith then I loose the challenge. "
Drew, age 14
he inspires me.

I will continue to update on Drew's Mysterious Medical Journey as we know more.

Let Your Faith Be {BIGGER} Than Your Fear

179088522651684959_ePP3YC2W_c

What does that saying mean to you??
It’s hard to really wrap your mind around actually just {TRUSTING} that everything is always under control isn’t it??
BUT IT IS!
Have you ever been challenged to do something and you know in your heart it {IS} the right thing to do?? But oh my goodness it’s going to be scary!! I’ve come to realize in those situations that is where you put your trust and faith in the ONE who promises to get us through {EVERYTHING} He brings us to if we just believe and love Him!
Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him..
Sometimes the new adventures in our life can be so overwhelmingly daunting and terrifying.  And sometimes it seems that there is NO way it can be conquered… but it {can}.  I’ve been through MANY things in my life.  I’ve been through sexual abuse, and I’ve felt the sting of abandonment, I’ve felt the fear that I’ll never be good enough, I’ve felt the fear that I might not be able to have a second change at marriage, I’ve felt the fear that I would screw up my kids. In the beginning I turned to drugs.. that did NOT make me braver or stronger.  Then I got pregnant at 18 and felt the fear of being a failure mother… so I turned into a control freak. (and was off the drugs… nothing was worth more to me than my son) That didn’t do anything but push people away… it wasn’t until about 5 years later, when I was at my own personal low, divorced, 2 sons, living with my mother in a not so good environment, at a dead end job, feeling like I didn’t deserve to be loved by anyone.. (cue the violins)
I met my husband… we said lets take the kids to church… and THAT is where I heard the Lord say welcome home my beloved Daughter. What?? You mean the Lord was with me through all the bad and good?? How does that make sense?? I found out through one verse how that makes sense:
John 16:33
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
There is NO need to fear ANYTHING if you have {FAITH} in the Lord because even if it’s the troubles in life… HE promised us ALL will be for good!! And when your being challenged.. don’t you know that the ONE who can heal ALL hurts, and Created the world can get you through it!! We are so blessed to have a Lord and Savior who can do ANYTHING!
what do you think??

{giving} Back ~ Redemption Rings

So today I’m randomly looking through Etsy, like I usually do and I cam across these, and my eyes literally welled up with tears. I love seeing the Lord working through others.  As Christians we are called to be an example of God’s love and to NOT turn a blind eye to injustice, and these people are shedding light on a problem that is so easy for society to ignore.
I don’t have the exact words to describe what amazing things these rings do to help human trafficking… so I’m going to copy their description and let their words speak for themselves:
“Psalm 72:14 "He will redeem them from oppression and violence, for their lives are precious to him."
Redemptions Rings were and idea that came out of my interest in working to bring young girls out of human trafficking rings here in Arizona and around the world. I started thinking about the word "ring" as I was wearing a wire ring a friend had made for me and how much it caused me to think of these girls trapped in this life. Here is this beautiful girl, trapped in this wire cage.
Then came the idea of Redemption Rings! What a beautiful picture to paint of these girls being "Redeemed" vs "Trafficked". I started making these rings to sell to raise money and awareness for my upcoming trafficking trip to Thailand. :)
Our premise for the rings is buy one, give one. Eveytime you buy a Redemption Ring we give one to a girl being trafficked to share the Redemption story either here in AZ or in another country through other organization / ministry contacts.
Now you can order your own Redemption Ring to wear as a reminder to pray for these girls trapped in these vicious cycles and that they would be Redeemed!

The pics above are from my recent trip to Thailand and girls we gave rings to - read more about it here – www.razzlefrazzled.blogspot.com
Thank you So much for your support!”
WOW… if that isn’t inspiring I don’t know what is!!!!! I will be getting the ring sizes of my loved ones and buying quite a few of these!!!
